The Mathematical Sciences Graduate Program offers the opportunity for graduate study in pure, applied, and computational mathematics, as well as in mathematical physics. The initial part of the program involves a broad mathematical education, followed by a flexible choice of advanced courses, seminars, and research activities leading to a dissertation.

When attempting to explain any kind of phenomena, it is important to consider the complex intertwining of individual-level and contextual, group-level variables. Only in recent years tools have been developed that allow to jointly analyze individual-level and group-level data. This course will give an introduction into the basic mathematical principles of multilevel analyses and will introduce the software Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). The course is application-oriented: Data preparation, model specification and examination of model results will be demonstrated and practiced.

Topics covered are vector and matrix theory, linear systems, least-squares methods; basic probability and random variables, examples of random processes (Markov chains, Poisson process, queuing systems); classification of optimization problems (on examples), linear programs and duality, elements of smooth optimization.
