Manchester's degree in English Law and French Law started in October 1990. It is a four-year course, the third year of which will be spent in France. At present, all students go to either the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon or the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in Lyon. It must be stressed that, unlike most other institutions, Manchester is offering a degree, not simply in English Law with French, but in English Law and French Law. In other words, we see the purpose of the course as being to give a grounding in the laws of both England and France, rather than merely to give an English legal education combined with advanced linguistic training language. Students will develop a good understanding of French law and the French legal system, as well as adding a strong comparative element to the standard LLB degree through spending a year studying a range of French law modules at a French university. Like our other LLB courses, this course enables graduates to obtain a `Qualifying Law Degree'.

This is a Joint Honours degree programme which admitted its first students in September 2006.
This degree builds on the many links between the related disciplines of law and criminology. This University's Law School is an especially good place to study these subjects together, as in September 2004, a group of criminologists joined a Law School with a tradition going back 130 years and which already incorporated an internationally renowned group of specialists. We are now a large School specialising in not just law and criminology, but also in human rights, medical law and ethics, legal theory, and international law with a particular emphasis on developing countries.
An advantage of taking law and criminology in one inter-disciplinary School such as this (as compared to taking a programme run jointly by two different Schools) is that we are able to provide an integrated programme that allows many topics to be approached from the viewpoint of both disciplines. It also means that you will not simply study
