This PhD thesis will be the first in-depth study of women and crime in Wales before 1660. It will focus on women’s access to justice and their treatment by the courts as defendants, victims of crime, and witnesses. The main archival sources will be the Great Sessions of Wales records (in criminal cases, the Welsh equivalent of the English Assizes), for which depositions, examinations and informations survive in far greater numbers and depth than they do for English Assizes. Star Chamber, Quarter Sessions, and consistory court records may also be consulted.
