Military History
University of Birmingham
The Military History programme taught at the University of Birmingham offers you the opportunity to explore military history, drawing in particular on Birmingham's expertise in the history of the two World Wars and air power. Subjects to be studied include command and leadership; tactics, operations and the use of technology; ethics and war; and the individual's experience of war.
The programme aims to explore a wide variety of air power issues and debates. It is open to students from all backgrounds including the armed forces, industry, students from other disciplines and those who seek to expand their knowledge of this exciting subject within a structured academic environment.
Trotsky famously described war as ‘the locomotive of history’. It has raised up kings and thrown down empires, spread ideas and religions around the world and has made and destroyed faith. It has made heroes of some, villains of others and fools of many. Can we understand our world without understanding the violent forces which created it? War Studies helps us do that, not only in the realm of power politics, but also in the culture which surrounds us from day to day.
War Studies graduates from Birmingham benefit from a high rate of employability for the subject. The wide range of posts they have secured includes roles in law, media, accountancy, publishing and teaching at every level.
To apply at one of these universities, you may need a proof of English proficiency. There are several standardised English tests that you can take to proof your English level, such as the PTE (Pearson Test of English), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), CAE (Cambridge Advanced English) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System), offered by British Council and IDP. IELTS is the most popular of these tests, with British Council offering more than 1000 test locations and being accepted by more than 9,000 organisations world-wide.
