The current course is to acquaint with the modern heuristic algorithms (HAs) in the context of (combinatorial/discrete) optimization problems. The general methodological issues regarding the solution of optimization problems are concerned. The taxonomy (classification) of heuristic algorithms is provided. The most popular heuristic algorithms are discussed, among them, local search algorithms, simulated annealing, tabu search, genetic algorithms, etc. The intent is to expose both negative and positive features of HAs by solving various types of the (combinatorial/discrete) optimization problems arising in different practical/theoretical fields.
