The European Union (EU) currently comprises 27 member states which differ, amongst others, with respect to institutional make-up as well as regulatory and welfare state regimes. Given the considerable heterogeneity between EU member states, this field addresses core questions relating to efficient and legitimate governance in the EU.
Mixed methods, i.e. the combination of elements from quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, has been gaining in importance as a research design over the past years. This hands-on course will guide students through the stages of conducting a mixed methods study. We will look at the different kinds of mixed methods designs and at issues that arise during sampling, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Students taking this course must be familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
The PhD-Program in Integrated Social Sciences is a Research-Only-PhD Program. When attempting to explain any kind of phenomena, it is important to consider the complex intertwining of individual-level and contextual, group-level variables. Only in recent years tools have been developed that allow to jointly analyze individual-level and group-level data. This course will give an introduction into the basic mathematical principles of multilevel analyses and will introduce the software Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). The course is application-oriented: Data preparation, model specification and examination of model results will be demonstrated and practiced.
