Modern Global History

Against the background of continuing globalization processes, the MA program "Modern Global History" seeks to make students familiar with the academic analysis of the history of different world regions and their entanglement since 1850. The program focuses on the space which developed through the processes of globalization and multiform modernization – and which is still developing as a world community beyond the nation state or via advanced organizational patterns as seen in Europe.
The Modern Global History Program is a 2-year MA program designed for an international student body. It combines the expertise of historians from two outstanding academic institutions: Jacobs University Bremen and the University of Bremen.
This course explores the impact of National Socialism on Germany and the world. It explains how and why Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) came to power, on which ideology and principles the ‘Third Reich’ (1933-1945) was based upon and why the Second World War took its particular shape. Partly chronologically, partly structural, it familiarizes students with the rise and demise of one of the most influential political movements of the 20th century. Furthermore, the course includes a field trip to a German concentration camp to provide participants with on-site experience.
The International Relations: Politics and History (IRPH) program from Jacobs University teaches students concepts and methods from a number of fields, including political science, history, law, and philosophy.
The BA program “Global Humanities” at Jacobs University Bremen explores global interactions in the spheres of literature and language, the visual arts, religion, philosophy, and history. It studies the reconfiguration of culture, society, and science, including the Humanities themselves, under the tremendous impact of globalization: What is the proper study of humanity in the age of cultural and digital globalization? What does it mean to think and act globally? How do the regional and the global co-exist in modern and contemporary culture? In which regards does the intertwinement between the local and the global form and affect our perception and interpretation of the world?
Introduction to Modern Middle East Politics and History

This course is designed to introduce the student to the essentials of politics, history and society in the Middle East. To set the scene for understanding contemporary politics, we will examine the impact of colonialism, the formation of the post-colonial state and the struggle for development. The nature of regimes and their relationships with society are examined. Particular emphasis will be placed on recent democratization processes in the Arab world. The course furthermore examines how Middle Eastern states relate to each other and to the West.
The course takes place from January 23rd – 31st, 2013.
