Background of Slovakia

The Slovak Republic, located in Central Europe, shares borders with the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, and Hungary. Bratislava is the capital, and Košice is the second-largest city. The ancestors of Slovaks were Slavs who arrived in the 5th and 6th centuries, establishing Great Moravia in the 9th century. The territory later became part of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After WWI, Slovaks and Czechs formed Czechoslovakia, which peacefully dissolved on January 1, 1993, leading to independent Slovakia. Slovakia is a high-income, advanced economy with one of the fastest growth rates in the EU, NATO, and OECD, having joined the EU in 2004. The official language is Slovak.
